Halloween Week in the Tri-Cities


Halloween is upon us, which means that November is just about here. And the fun keeps rolling on. Read on to find out what’s cooking this week in the V3H!

What: Boogie Nights – Celebration of Women
When: Thursday, October 28 from 6-9:45pm
Where: Inlet Theatre [map]
The skinny: A night for all ladies to come out, be social and dance. Entertainment provided by Disco Diva and Truly Tina. Dress in you best disco or Tina costume or attire!! $5 will be refunded from each ticket at the door with a donation of soft toy or slippers – an initiative by local Port moody resident Sheila Alwell in support of the Kate Booth House for abused women and children.

What: Cesar Millan Live
When: Thursday, October 28 at 8pm

The skinny: Oprah Winfrey, Scarlett Johansson, Will Smith and Nicholas Cage have all had their dogs trained and balanced by TV sensation, Cesar Millan. Cesar has gained a dedicated following as host of his Emmy-nominated television series, Dog Whisperer and now fans and dog lovers will have the opportunity to witness Cesar’s talents first hand as he brings his enlightening and hugely entertaining live show to Canada for the first time. Cesar will be using state-of-the-art multimedia accompanied by dogs and their owners to illustrate his unique concepts. Please note: “Cesar Millan Live” is for people training therefore no patron dogs are allowed at the venues.

What: Ghosts in the Hood
When: Friday, October 29 – Children’s Show at 6:45pm, Adult Show at 8pm

The skinny: To put you in the Halloween spirit, come to the dramatic reading of the best ghost stories of the Lower Mainland from the true tales collection of best-selling author Robert C. Belyk. “Ghosts in the Hood” is directed and edited for the stage by Bill Allman who has long been associated with the Vancouver live productions. Pleased be advised that some people may find the adult show very scary.

What: Crossroads Coffeehouse
When: Friday, October 29 – 7pm doors open, 7:30 open stage, 9 feature performer
Where: The Gathering Place [map]
The skinny: Featuring Bally Hooley, a dynamic Vancouver-based group of musicians in love with the Irish musical tradition. Playing nine different instruments among them, the band members Vanessa Kay, Tim Fanning and Glenn Buholzer delight in creative arrangements representing the many moods of Irish music. Prepare to enjoy a variously raucous, stirring and haunting performance just in time for Halloween.

What: Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex Grand Opening Celebration

The skinny: Visit Coquitlam’s state-of-the-art sport and leisure complex, meet people from Coquitlam Sport Groups and try something new. There is fun planned for everyone, including a sports fair and try-its, the official grand opening gala, featuring figure skating, a variety show and official speeches, a VIP hockey game, and free curling, skating and swimming. What: Masque Royale

The skinny: Douglas College invites you to be part of our 40th anniversary gala, the “Masque Royale”. Our “Masque Royale” has its roots in 16th and 17th century Europe where the court frequently held masques (essentially big parties) in honour of a significant event. The black tie/costume event brings together more than 400 business, civic and community leaders from throughout the Lower Mainland to mix and mingle in a unique and exciting atmosphere featuring artists, circus performers and dancing in a tribute to the 40th anniversary of Douglas College and the Foundation’s 25th. Ticket price is $125.

What: Danny Gokey
When: Saturday, October 30 at 8pm

The skinny: From his days of long hours as a truck driver to his third place finish on Season 8 of FOX’s American Idol, singer-songwriter Danny Gokey has soaked up more life experience than most people twice his age. During his tenure on Idol, the Milwaukee native impressed the judges with his versatility as he performed hits by Carrie Underwood, Michael Jackson and Rascal Flatts among others. Danny credits his late wife, Sophia, with the inspiration to pursue his musical dreams on Idol and he continues to honour her with the charitable work of the Sophia’s Heart Foundation which was founded in her memory.

What: Mr.I’s Slightly Spooky Songs and Stories

The skinny: Local teacher and children’s entertainer Yurgen Ilaender (Mr.I), leads Halloween fun for children ages 2 and up. Mr.I’s popular annual Halloween concert will enchant youngsters and their parents. Costumes are welcome, and audience participation is encouraged. General Admission is $7.

The skinny: Dread. Fear. Fret. Get in the mood for fright night with the sounds of Halloween past and present. Berlioz, Bach and Whitacre will send you off on your night of trick or treating with a skip in your step…and a skip in your heart! Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble will be led by guest conductor, Evan Mitchell. Wear your Halloween costume to the concert….there will be prizes!

What: Port Coquitlam EnviroPlan Open House
When: Monday, November 1 from 6-9pm

The skinny: Attend the EnviroPlan open house to learn about and comment on the City of Port Coquitlam’s first environmental strategic plan. The City has been developing the draft plan over the past 18 months with the goal of making Port Coquitlam a leader in protecting the environment. Public input received at the open house will be considered by Council, along with other information, prior to adoption of the final EnviroPlan and implementation plan in early 2011.
