Getting Spooky in the Tri-Cities

Halloween is still more than a week away, but already the events are getting into full swing here in the V3H. Read on to find out what spooky (and non-spooky) fun there is to be had this week in the Tri-Cities!

What: Variety Kids Non Scary Halloween Haunted House
When: October 19-30, from 6:30-9pm
Where: 443 Draycott Street, Coquitlam [map]
The skinny: Come in the dark, come in the rain! Come visit our haunted house and get into the Halloween spirit! This event is wheelchair accessible and suitable for all ages. Bring your excess coins and empty bottles for our coin and bottle drive. 100% of all money raised will go to wheelchairs and stairwalkers.

What: Permanent Resident Card (in Mandarin)
When: Thursday, October 21 from 1:30-3:30pm
Where: Poirier Library [map]
The skinny: Speaker Annie Zhou, a Community Settlement Counsellor with ISS, will discuss Permanent Resident cards, including eligibility requirements, the forms and documents needed, as well as processing time for regular and urgent applications. Registration is required for this program as seating is limited. This program is in Mandarin.

What: Love it or Heave it: De-cluttering your Home
When: Thursday, October 21 from 7-8:30pm
Where: Poirier Library [map]
The skinny: Anna Camporese is a self-confessed, recovering clutterholic who is committed to de-cluttering in a responsible way that honours people’s possessions, while at the same time encouraging them to pass on the items they no longer need or love. Her talk is light-hearted – part Power-Point and part fun props to engage the audience – with solid tips and ideas to motivate audience members to start de-cluttering and organizing their homes. Registration is required for this program as seating is limited.

What: Coquitlam Foundation Gala
When: Friday, October 22 at 5:30pm
Where: Red Robinson Show Theatre [map]
The skinny: The “Laugh out Loud” Gala kicks off in the theatre’s upper foyer at 5:30pm with appetizers, an open bar, silent auction and more. Revelers are encouraged to wear their ‘loudest’ shirts to get into the “Laugh Out Loud” spirit of the evening. The action then shifts inside the theatre, where merrymakers will enjoy premium seats for the 8pm show of comedian Steven Wright, master of the deadpan delivery and devastating one-liner! The Academy Award-winning comedian is #23 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 Greatest Stand-up Comics.

What: The Surreal Project 2
When: Friday, October 22 and Saturday, October 23 from 8-10pm

The skinny: The Surreal Project 2 is an experimental theatre installation, featuring short pieces throughout the Port Moody Civic Centre. It’s going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen. The show is an open theatre exploration: you show up in the lobby and you’re immediately immersed with surreal theatre happening all around you. Take a moment to have a drink at the bar, then check your program for the show schedule. Each show is somewhere different in the building – we’re even using City Hall meeting rooms! You decide what you want to see, when you want to see it.

What: Swap-O-Rama-Rama
When: Saturday, October 23 from 10am-4pm

The skinny: Swap-O-Rama-Rama is an event that taps into the DIY, green and frugal trends, and adds a fun, fashionable and social twist. Participants swap a bag of clean clothes they don’t want anymore for some new-to-them items, and re-make them into something even better. Or, in other words, they re-funk their junk. There are materials, equipment and experienced help on hand as everyone decorates, sews, silkscreens or paints new creations.

What: Port Moody Rock and Gem Club Annual Show
When: Saturday, October 23 and Sunday, October 24 from 10am-5pm

The skinny: Featuring local lapidary artists and wonders of nature, our annual rock and gem show is an enjoyable and fascinating event for visitors of all ages. The skinny: The Station Area Design Consultation Discussion Guide presents information and seeks feedback on key aspects of station area design, appearance and function; features of each station area, including parking, bus facilities and pedestrian, vehicle and bicycle access; landscaping at Evergreen Line stations; and traffic management during construction of the Evergreen Line. Feedback gathered during this consultation will help finalize the design of the Evergreen Line in advance of beginning construction in early 2011.

What: Theatrix Halloween Dance

What: Salmon Come Home
