Canadian Navy Centennial Closing Ceremonies

The Canadian Navy has been celebrating their centennial across Canada over the past few months. Port Moody has been host to many of these events throughout the summer. This Saturday, October 2nd starting at 11:30am, the closing ceremonies will take place at Rocky Point Park, and you’re invited to join in the celebration.

All taking place at the Rocky Point Park gazebo, here’s the program lineup…

Sandra Baron of the Port Moody Commemorative Society will dedicate a commemorative garden with the unveiling of a plaque and five Navy Lady roses in honor of the women in the Navy.

Jim Bodo, President of the Port Moody Legion Branch #119 will present a copy of the book The Naval Service of Canada edited by Richard H. Gimblett, to the Port Moody Library. The book is compliments of Chapters, Coquitlam.

The Navy flag will be lowered and presented to the Acting Mayor who in turn will present it to the Port Moody Grilse Sea Cadets.

Music will be provided by Toby Beaulieu who provides exotic strains of guitar harmonies during regular visits to the Gazebo, and by Corbin VanderZalm who will lead in the singing of O Canada along with the Vancouver Naval Veterans Band.

A memorial bell will also be unveiled and presented to the City as a standing legacy of commitment to the dramatic story of tradition, perseverance and courage in service to Canada and Canadians. The bell is donated by West Marine, Vancouver.

Following the ceremonies, a reception will be held at the Boathouse, and all are invited to attend.

All these activities are happening in Port Moody because of the grant received from the “Building Communities through Arts and Heritage” program of the Ministry of Canadian Heritage, led by our MP James Moore. This grant, and donations from individuals, help fund each of the events planned and presented by the Port Moody Commemorative Society.

So this Saturday come out to hear some great music and commemorate 100 years of the Canadian Navy.
