Summertime, and Finding Fun is Easy

What: Annie, Jr. and RENT
When: Tuesday, July 20 – Sunday, July 25, with Annie at 1pm and RENT at 7:30pm daily

The skinny: Theatrix Youtheatre presents two great shows. In Annie, the popular comic strip heroine takes center stage in one of the world’s best-loved musicals, full of fun for all ages. RENT isJonathan Larson’s Pulitzer-prize winning Broadway musical, which follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York’s East Village. RENT is geared towards mature audiences.

What: Mad Science
When: Friday, July 23 from 1-1:30pm

The skinny: Mad Science shows amaze and entertain young audiences in unique ways. Shows are exciting performances that demonstrate just how much fun science can be. Help Eggbert get into his home, explore the concepts of lift and heat. Watch dry ice fog storms, taste a CO2 burp, and even have a bubble shower. Back by popular demand, Mad Science is great fun for one and all. Free tickets (available from the library) required.

What: Port Moody Rock and Gem Club Really Rocks!
When: Friday, July 23 from 2:30-3:30pm

The skinny: Learn about the secret life of rocks with the Port Moody Rock and Gem Club. This interactive workshop features information on working with gemstones, rockhounding, and the science behind the stones. Free drop-in, no registration required.

What: Cinema Under the Stars

The skinny: Back by popular demand to a park near you! Port Coquitlam’s towering, 26ft tall enormous silver screen will be traveling around the city throughout the summer months; so pack a picnic, bring a blanket and round up some friends or bring the whole family out to Cinema Under the Stars. This showing is Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is a sure-fire win in my book.

What: Kick for a Cure

The skinny: 24 soccer teams will play through the day in a World Cup format to raise money and awareness for Childhood Cancer. Soccer is about teamwork, spirit, strength and the fight to win. Those touched by cancer share a similar journey and need the same strength and courage to win their individual fight. Your support and the important contribution of your time and energy will enhance our quest. Let’s kick childhood cancer where it hurts!

What: What Swims Beneath
When: Saturday, July 24 from 10am-3pm

The skinny: Ever wonder what lives below the Burrard Inlet? Come check out what swims beneath this important marine habitat! Peek into an aquarium containing many species of local fish. Enter a colouring contest for Vancouver Aquarium passes and Port Moody Public Library gift packs. Take a browse through live interactive displays put on by local stewardship groups. The City of Port Moody is also on hand with simple steps on how you can protect the Burrard Inlet.

What: Integrated Health’s Wall

The skinny: Integrated Health has finally figured out what to do with that big blank wall! They are painting a mural on the side of the building that overlooks the church parking lot and would love your input. Join them as they brainstorm about three areas – community, wellness and sustainability. What do you imagine Port Moody will look like in these areas in the future? Your ideas will be captured by a graphic reporter, and will form the basis of a mural to be painted on the wall.

What: Big Heart Rescue Pub Night

The skinny: Join in on some cold brews, good food, and lots of fun – all in support of Big Heart Rescue Society. Big Heart Rescue Society is a non-profit registered charity that rescues abused, neglected and abandoned dogs in need in BC.

What: Family Fun Nights at the Mall

The skinny: Children aged 3 to 10 and their parents are invited to join Tri-City Librarians at Coquitlam Centre Mall for Family Fun Nights, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on the last Wednesday of each month. Imagine, play and learn through stories, songs, arts and more! No registration is required – please drop in. They meet on the lower level in front of London Drugs and the Toy Jungle.
