Swapping and Dancing in the Tri-Cities

It’s everyone’s favourite time of the week again, when I fill you in on all the super-exciting things on the go here in the V3H this week. And believe me, this week we have both super and exciting. So read on!

There will be another Beginner Internet Workshop on Thursday, April 15 from 10-11am at the Coquitlam Public Library’s Poirier Branch [map]. To take this course, you must be able to use the mouse to click and scroll. In this course, we build on those skills to find out how to find information on the Internet. Registration is required, but the program is free. For more information, or to register, call 604.937.4144.

Join Ballet Kelowna for Masters’ Play on Thursday, April 15 at 8pm at Evergreen Cultural Centre [map]. Masters’ Play is filled with artistic tension and energy featuring ground-breaking Canadian ballets that helped change the international dance scene. For more information, or to buy tickets, call 604.927.6555.

Port Moody is holding its extremely popular Kids Only Swap Meet on Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18 from 9am-1pm at the Port Moody Arena [map]. Bargain hunters in search of children’s outgrown clothing, toys, books and sports equipment will be sure to find more than a few treasures. Admission is free and there are more than 60 different tables each day, so drop by more than once. For more information, call 604.469.4556.

In an effort to reduce waste and promote recycling, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam are each holding City-Wide Garage Sales this Saturday, April 17 from 9am-1pm. Keep an eye on the local paper for a list of participating addresses.

The SHARE Just Desserts Gala, that we filled you in on a couple of weeks back, is happening this Saturday, April 17 from 7-10pm at the Red Robinson Show Theatre [map].

On Saturday, April 17 at 8pm you’re invited to Spring into Quiring at Evergreen Cultural Centre [map]. The Quiring Chamber Players are Angela Goddard, Rosemary O’Connor and Reg Quiring. Together since 2002, they have been bringing world class chamber music performances and education to the Tri-Cities. They are joined at this concert by guest musicians Beth Sandvoss and Ian Swensen. For more information, or to buy tickets, call 604.927.6555.

On Sunday, April 18 at 2pm the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble presents In the Spotlight at Evergreen Cultural Centre [map]. In the long standing tradition of classical music, the soloist stands before the ensemble, taking risks and expressing individuality. The soloist tells a story and the ensemble sets the backdrop, yet they move together as one. PSWE trumpeter, Dean Markel, and the rest of the ensemble as express the myriad of solo and ensemble colours of the wind band. For more information, or to buy tickets, call 604.927.6555.

There will be another Family Day on Sunday, April 18 from 3-5pm at Place des Arts [map]. Does the thought of touring an art gallery leave you cold? Do you think you have to be an “artist” to create art? Then gather up the family and let loose your inner artist. Tour exhibitions by photographer Paul Colangelo, painter Ian Semple and ceramicist/fibre artist Tracie Maryne. Learn about cameras and photography, and participate in drop-in style workshops for all ages. For more information call 604.664.1636 or email info@placedesarts.ca.

There will be an Earth Week Book Swap on Tuesday, April 20 from 4-7pm at the Coquitlam Public Library’s Poirier Branch [map]. The library, in partnership with the David Suzuki Foundation, invites local residents to bring one or two of their own “good reads” to talk about and swap with other reading enthusiasts. The idea of the book swap is not only to exchange books, but to have a conversation with others in your community, sharing what you enjoyed about a particular book and passing on a good reading experience for someone else to enjoy. The books will be “recycled” to other good homes, and participants may find other readers with similar reading reading tastes and a potpourri of “new” books to explore. Sustainable coffee and tea will be served, so feel free to bring your own mug! For more information call 604.937.4144.

Port Coquitlam will be holding OFF THE GRID – Improvised Music Series on Tuesday, April 20 from 7-9pm at Leigh Square [map]. The event is free. For more information call 604.789.3456.

Have a great week!
