May Day in the Tri-Cities

May is my favourite month of all, so I am really looking forward to it. I’m also looking forward to all of the fabulous events on the go this week. Read on to see what’s cooking in the V3H!

What: Family Fun Nights at the Mall
When: Wednesday, April 28 from 6-8pm
Where: Coquitlam Centre [map]
The skinny: Children aged 3 to 10 and their parents are invited to join Tri-City Librarians at Coquitlam Centre Mall. Imagine, play and learn through stories, songs, arts and more. No registration is required – please drop in! Meet on the lower level in front of London Drugs and the Toy Jungle.

What: Bear Essentials Seminar
When: Wednesday, April 28 at 7pm
Where: Inlet Theatre [map]
The skinny: After a mild winter, black bears are already emerging from their annual slumber. If you live near a green belt, this is your chance to learn how you and your family can stay safe at home and out in the community. Seating is on a first-come basis and the free is sponsored by Port Moody Parks and Environmental Services.

What: Cultural Sharing Event
When: Thursday, April 29 from 1:30-5:30pm
Where: Glen Pine Pavilion [map]
The skinny: If you are a fan of a shared cultural experiences, this is an opportunity that you do not want to miss. The Evergreen Musical Troupe will be performing the Mandarin Opera and the traditional Cantonese Opera in English and do a presentation of the Cantonese Opera make-up, dress-up, and performing skills.

What: Ravenscroft
When: Thursday, April 29 to Sunday, May 2
Where: Evergreen Cultural Centre [map]
The skinny: This psychological drama is a thinking person’s Gothic thriller. On a snowy night, Inspector Ruffing is called to a remote house to investigate the headlong plunge of Patrick Roake down the main staircase. He becomes involved in the lives of the five alluring and dangerous women, who lead him through a bewildering labyrinth of contradictory versions of Patrick’s demise and that of the late Mr. Ravenscroft. You will not guess the ending, but you will be teased, seduced, bewildered, amused, frightened and led to a dark encounter with truth or something even stranger.

What: May Day Festival Kick-Off
When: Friday, April 30 at 7:30pm
Where: Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex [map]
The skinny: The City of Port Coquitlam has been celebrating May Day since 1923. The modern day celebration includes a whole week of fun-filled activities including outdoor concerts, community showcases, May Pole dancing, amusement rides, the Kids Toonie Fun Run and the May Day Rotary Parade. Events continue throughout the week and wrap up with Mother’s Day in Lions Park on Sunday, May 9, 2010.

What: Till Death Do Us Part or Until You Get Fat
When: Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1 at 8pm
Where: Second Storey Theatre [map]
The skinny: An original one act comedy by Jodi Mason and Russ Brummer. The play revolves around Sandi and James during a marriage counseling session as they re-examine their life together and try to get their derailed relationship back on track. This funny and touching story will be something everyone can relate to. The play contains adult humour, and is intended for mature audiences.

What: Randy Travis

The skinny: Award winning country singer, Randy Travis helped launch the revival of traditional country music with his smooth voice and simple songs. From his 1985 breakthrough hit, “On the Other Hand” to his 2009 single, “Turn It Around,” Travis has demonstrated flawless taste in lyrics and immense finesse as a vocal stylist. His record sales have exceeded 25 million and he has received a total of 6 Grammy Awards.

What: The Fingerling Festival
When: Saturday, May 1 from 11am-3pm
Where: Noons Creek Hatchery [map]
The skinny: Release young chum salmon into Noons Creek and help them on their journey to the Pacific Ocean, hear Bobs and Lolo, learn about local wildlife from groups such as OWL and Critter Care and visit displays from stewardship organizations around the Lower Mainland to discover what you can do to take better care of the environment. This is a fabulous, free, family event.

What: Battle of the Atlantic Dinner and Dance
When: Saturday, May 1 from 6-9pm
Where: Port Moody City Hall Galleria [map]
The skinny: 2010 marks the 100th year of Canadian Naval Service and the Port Moody Commemorative Society is recognizing our proud heritage and the courage of our naval veterans and current day military. This event is a sit down dinner followed by old time swing music provided by the Port Moody Community Band 13 piece band.

What: Awards Gala
When: Saturday, May 1 at 7pm
Where: Place des Arts [map]
The skinny: Celebrate Place des Arts’ 2010 scholarship winners at the annual Awards Gala. This year, the Gala will be held in the Leonore Peyton Salon. Highlights include performances in ballet, hip hop, piano, clarinet, cello and voice. Art work by this year’s recipient of the W. H. Sclater Memorial Award will be on display. Come out and support local young talent.

What: Don Rickles
When: Saturday, May 1 at 8pm

The skinny: For almost fifty years, Don Rickles has appeared in the top showrooms of Atlantic City, Reno, Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas and is regarded as one of the world’s funniest comedians. He continues to be perform his stand-up comedy to sold out audiences across North America and and has no plans to retire.

What: Children’s Swap Meet
When: Sunday, May 2 from 9am-1pm
Where: Poirier Community Centre [map]
The skinny: Bargain hunters, check the loads of goodies for your kids: books, baby accessories and clothes. Everyone’s been busy cleaning out their babies’ and children’s closets and toy boxes so you can swap until you drop. Free admission and concession available with light refreshments. Over 75 tables!

What: Hike for Hospice
When: Sunday, May 2 from 9am-12pm

Port Coquitlam Hike at Hyde Creek Recreation Centre [map]
The skinny: Hikers, ramblers, and wanderers are all welcome to join the Crossroads Hospice Society for the 8th Annual Hike for Hospice. This national pledge-based family event takes place on the first Sunday of May, and raises funds to support people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones.

What: Battle of the Atlantic Anniversary Parade and Reception
When: Sunday, May 2 from 11am-1pm
Where: Port Moody Legion Branch 119 [map]
The skinny: 2010 marks the 100th year of Canadian Naval Service and the Port Moody Commemorative Society is recognizing our proud heritage and the courage of our naval veterans and current day military. This event includes a benediction, laying of wreaths, march with local legions’ Colour Parties and local navy bands with reception to follow. All are welcome.

What: Salmon Leave Home
When: Sunday, May 2 from 11am-3pm
Where: Hoy Creek Hatchery [map]
The skinny: Families release young Coho salmon fry into Hoy Creek where they will start their long journey to the Pacific Ocean. The salmon have been raised from the egg stage at the Hatchery. Once released into the creek, these young salmon will have a treacherous journey to the ocean where they will live for several years before returning.

What: The Vulture, the Loot and the Anvil by Jay Hanscom
When: Sunday, May 2 from 4-5:30pm
Where: Evergreen Cultural Centre [map]
The skinny: This body of new and recent work by Victoria-based artist Jay Hanscom evolved out of an interest in building curious but intentional relationships between unlikely objects as well as bridging the gap between ideas he had about art as a youth to the work he now produces. The exhibition runs from April 30 – May 22, and this is the Opening Reception.
