Earth Day in the Tri-Cities


Tomorrow is Earth Day, and there are many ways to celebrate here in the V3H. Or, if that’s not your style, there are still plenty of other ways to get out and have a good time, too. This week I am trying a new format for these posts to make them easier for me, and more readable for you. I hope it works. To find out, read on!

What: 5th Annual Port Coquitlam Healthy Kids Fair
When: Thursday, April 22 from 9:00am-12:30pm
Where: Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex [map]
The skinny: Community partners including Port Coquitlam Parks and Recreation , Fraser Health, SHARE, Simon Fraser Society for Community Living, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., Terry Fox Library, Tri-Cities Early Childhood Development Committee and the YMCA present the Healthy Kids Fair for families with children 0-6 years old. The organizations will provide parents with information on safety, health, literacy awareness, recreation and community programs, including child care and preschool. On-site interpretation will be available in Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and Farsi. Presenters do not include organizations selling goods or services.

What: Pesticide-Free Gardening
When: Thursday, April 22 from 7-8:30pm
Where: Coquitlam Public Library’s Poirier Branch [map]
The skinny: Enjoy your garden more while spending less money, time and water looking after it. CBC Radio organic gardening expert Arzeena Hamir will share simple steps and tips on how to manage a lawn and garden without the use of pesticides. Presented by the Canadian Cancer Society, this workshop also provides information on the non-essential use of pesticides and their links to cancer. The program is free, and registration is required.

What: Mom’s The Word

The skinny: The mother of all shows, by the Mom’s the Word Collective is back in Coquitlam. There will be 3 shows, and two have sold out already. The moms are unstoppable – don’t miss them!

What: Jelly Bean Dance
When: Friday, April 23 from 6:15-9:15pm
Where: Hyde Creek Recreation Centre [map]
The skinny: Children in grades 4-6 can enjoy a night of fun-filled activities with door prizes, carnival games, a professional DJ and supervision.

What: ArtsConnect’s 11th Annual ArtWalk
When: Opening Reception – Friday, April 23 from 6:30-8:30pm
ArtWalk – Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25 from 12-5pm
Where: Opening Reception – Old Mill Boathouse [map], ArtWalk – Various venues in Port Moody [map]
The skinny: The ArtWalk is a self-guided tour, featuring the work of over 50 local artists working in a wide variety of media. This is a chance to experience the arts up close and meet local artists. You can also view and buy some fantastic original pieces by participating artists from right here in our own backyard. While the ArtWalk happens in Port Moody, the artists come from around the Tri-Cities.

What: Till Death Do Us Part or Until You Get Fat
When: Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24 at 8pm
Where: Second Storey Theatre [map]
The skinny: An original one act comedy by Jodi Mason and Russ Brummer. The play revolves around Sandi and James during a marriage counseling session as they re-examine their life together and try to get their derailed relationship back on track. This funny and touching story will be something everyone can relate to. The play contains adult humour, and is intended for mature audiences.

What: Suburban RUSH
When: Saturday, April 24 at 10am
Where: Port Moody
The skinny: Suburban RUSH is an approximately 30 kilometer multi-sport, off-road adventure race and is a great introduction to multi-sport off-road racing. Based on your fitness level it may take anywhere from 2-6 hours to complete. The event will challenge novice and seasoned racers alike. There is no water section. As part of adventure racing tradition, the race course will be held a secret until race day.

What: Children’s Earth Festival
When: Saturday, April 24 from 11am-3pm
Where: Anmore School [map]
The skinny: There will be a variety of children’s activities, including live music, recycled art, interactive nature displays, gardening, face painting, family games and fun food. This is an indoor / outdoor event, and it will run rain or shine.

What: Crafter’s Market
When: Saturday, April 24 from 11am-4pm (and every Saturday thereafter)

The skinny: Cherish the Thought Scrapbooking will be hosting a crafter’s market fevery Saturday will, featuring up to 15 different artisans working in a variety of media including paper crafts, jewelry, soap, photography, sculpture and paint.

What: The Coquitlam Chorale presents “With Spirit”
When: Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25

The skinny: In their annual Spring concert the Coquitlam Chorale celebrates the Olympic and Paralympic athletes who inspired us all during the Vancouver Games.

What: Air Supply
When: Saturday, April 24 at 8pm

The skinny: Vocalist Russell Hitchcock and guitarist/vocalist Graham Russell have sold over thirty million records dominating the charts with such hits as “Lost In Love”, “All Out Of Love”, “Even The Nights Are Better”, “The One That You Love” and “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All”. Catch them in Coquitlam.

What: From Genealogy to Family History
When: Monday, April 26 from 6:30-8:30pm
Where: Terry Fox Library [map]
The skinny: There are a lot of resources available to turn that list of names and dates into the people who were our ancestors. Find out where they lived, went to school, what they did for a living and how they might have dressed. They’ll also look at a couple of ways of recording your information.

What: Family Fun Nights
When: Tuesday, April 27 from 6:30-7:30pm
Where: Port Moody Public Library, in the ParkLane Room [map]
The skinny: Help your child 3-6 year old get ready for kindergarten. Build important pre-reading skills with stories, alphabet crafts, and take home activities. This is a free drop-in program, and parent participation is required.
