87 Years of May Day in PoCo


The City of Port Coquitlam has been celebrating May Day since 1923. This year, as they mark 87 years of May Day, events kick off on Friday, April 30 and continue until Sunday, May 9. It’s over a week of fun-filled activities including outdoor concerts, community showcases, May Pole dancing, amusement rides, the Kids Toonie Fun Run and the May Day Rotary Parade.

April 29 – May 30

Youth in Focus by Youth in the Community and Suite E
Leigh Square Arts Village [map]
Celebrating Youth Week 2010, youth from across the community will contribute a variety of artwork and photographs to a group exhibition. In addition, members of Suite E, a life drawing group, will present original work on the same theme.

April 30 at 7:30pm
Opening Ceremony
Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex [map]
2010 May Days kickoff with the installation of our May Queen and Ambassador from the Royal Party. Enjoy traditional May Pole Dancing performed by our local school children and free family entertainment.

May 1 – May 2 from 11am – 5pm
Art Focus May Day Art Show
Leigh Square Arts Village [map]
A collective of Tri-Cities artists, display a wide range of original works in a variety of media.

May 1 from 7:30pm to midnight
Heritage May Day Dance
Wilson Centre [map]
Featuring DJ ‘Retro Infusion’ playing the best dance and rock from the 60s to today. Tickets available at
the Outlet or at pocomuseum.org.

May 2 at 9am

Seniors and Youth Special Dinner

Come see what all the hype is about. For 2 years, Youth and Seniors have been cooking and eating together every Wednesday. Join them for a special Youth Week Dinner. Tickets are limited, so reserve yours in advance at Wilson Centre.

Tri-City R.E.A.C.H. Awards

The Tri-City REACH Awards recognize the generous contribution of individual youth, youth groups, businesses and organizations, and adult mentors in the Tri-Cities who make our communities youth friendly.

West Coast Amusement Rides

Rides and games galore!

May 8 at 11am

Port Coquitlam Rotary May Day Parade
Excitement and fun for the whole family music, marching bands, floats and many laughs. In 2009, the parade included 120 participants, lasted 2 hours and was viewed by 20,000 spectators. It’s a great event that you won’t want to miss!

Bring your family to Leigh Square on parade day for the Community Block Party which includes a Community Showcase featuring a pancake breakfast, Taste of Port Coquitlam, crafts, a marketplace and live local entertainment.

Mother’s Day Picnic in Lions Park

Highlights of the wonderful Mother’s Day Picnic include breakfast and lunch, a family fun run, a pet contest, Art Focus Art in the Park, a bike parade, children’s entertainers and May Pole dancing.
