Fin Donnelly Wins Byelection

Today one of the stranger byelection campaigns came to a close, and as expected NDP candidate Fin Donnelly came out on top in the riding of New Westminster-Coquitlam. Strange in that the Conservative candidate Diana Dilworth was a no-show at both all-candidates meetings, causing that to become the story instead of the policies of either of the front-running parties. Who knows what may have happened if those campaign decisions were different. As it played out though, it looks like this will be the largest margin of victory ever in the riding.

Final Results (225/225 polls reporting):

Fin Donnelly, NDP: 49.6%, 12,129
Diana Dilworth, Conservative: 35.8%, 8,753
Ken Beck Lee, Liberal: 10.3%, 2,514
Rebecca Helps, Green: 4.3%, 1,046

Turnout: 24,442 of 81,805 registered voters (29.9%)

Turnout was way down from the 61% of registered voters who showed up for the 2008 Federal Election.

We at The V3H would like to thank all the candidates for not only participating in our interview series, but for being very communicative throughout the campaign. All the best to all of them in their future endeavours, and good luck to Fin as he makes his way to Ottawa. You can visit his website at
